The Event: A Night At The Apollo

The Back Story: Lady Gaga’s tribute concert celebrating Pride Week took place at this historic Harlem theater, which was built in 1914, initially as a Burlesque venue, but eventually became the ultimate stage for some of the greatest jazz stars in the world – including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Duke Ellington.

The Hair: There were a million reasons to cheer…but Gaga’s hair was at the top of the list. Hiding underneath her trademark wig masterpieces was that iconic Platinum White Blonde, which needed a root touch-up for the occasion.

Here’s how Frederic made it happen….

FORMULASThe Color: Touch up level 3-4 roots to level 11 Platinum White Blonde

The Formula:
Prep: Defy Damage ProSeries 1: Bond-Protecting Color Optimizer

Formula 1: Blonde Life Crème Lightener with 20 Volume LumiShine Developer

Formula 2: LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 1 ¼ oz 10SB + ¾ oz Clear with 2 oz 5 Volume LumiShine Developer

Post: Defy Damage ProSeries 2: Bond-Strengthening Color Treatment

Step 1
Start by removing build-up of minerals and discoloration by using Blonde Life Brightening Masque prior to lightening – it detoxifies and neutralizes instantly. Dry each section. Part hair into 3 sections: two sections in the front with a center part and one large section in the back. Leave hair in sections and spray Defy Damage ProSeries 1 in short bursts onto 2-inch sections. Remember not to oversaturate hair. Comb thru for even distribution and re-clip section.

Step 2
Mix Blonde Life Créme Lightener with 20 Volume LumiShine Developer and apply, starting at the back section. Taking very fine 1/8-inch partings, apply formula to the regrowth area. Saturate each side of the section. Try not to oversaturate.

Step 3
Apply lightening formula only to the regrowth, making sure to not overlap into the previously lightened hair. Continue applying mixture to the entire regrowth area to every section the head. Process the application until level 11 (palest yellow) is achieved.

Step 4
Rinse the hair and shampoo with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo. Towel-blot and squeeze hair gently throughout head.

Step 5
Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and prepare the hair for the toning application.

Step 6

Apply Toning Formula to the scalp first, then continue throughout the rest of the hair. Gently move mixture through hair with fingers or wide-tooth comb. Process hair for 10-15 minutes, or until desired tone is achieved; rinse out.

Step 7
Apply Defy Damage Protective Shampoo and follow with Defy Damage ProSeries 2. Leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse.

Step 8
Towel-blot and squeeze water out of hair. After treatment, use 2-3 pumps of Defy Damage Protective Shield for added protection during the blowdry. Comb through.

STYLING

Look #1: Full, sexy, voluminous tousled hair

STEP-BY-STEP

Step 1

Apply K-PAK Thermal Design Foam to hair and comb through for maximum body and control.

Step 2

Starting at the top of the head, use a medium-size thermal brush to blow-dry a 1-inch section of hair. Use a small clip to secure dried hair into a vertical pin curl. Repeat throughout the hair. Allow to cool. Take all pins out and use cool blast from the blow dryer, then finger comb though hair.

Step 3

Spray Joico Body Shake Texturizing Finisher into hair. Start by shaking well and apply all over dry hair, using fingers to tousle and plump up strands.

Step 4

Tease at crown and sides of head. Use soft boar-bristle paddle brush to comb and smooth out top.

Step 5

Spray Joico Design Works Shaping Spray for soft, touchable-yet-manageable hold.

Look #2: Pulled-back bun with texture

STEP-BY-STEPStep 1
Pull hair back, and use 2 – 3 pumps of Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil (emulsified in palms of hands) to smooth hair down and add shine.

Step 2
Secure bun with 3 – 4 bobby pins.

Step 3
Using fingers, pull up small sections of hair at front and crown for added texture.

Step 4
Spray with Joico Body Shake Texturizing Finisher for hold and dimension.
